Why do I schedule outdoor photoshoots an hour before sunset?
For me there are three main things when it comes to taking great photos aside from the technical stuff like camera settings and focus. They are light, connection and composition. There is absolutely no better or more beautiful light than the golden hour before and at sunset.
Why golden hour?
The light at golden hour is low in the sky so it is much more flattering. It also has a warm and enveloping orange glow which brings all the magic to your photos. It will take your gallery from good to epic. There are no harsh hot spots, the light is only soft and dreamy. You only need to look around during the middle of the day and then look again as the sun is going down; everything looks more beautiful at that time of day.
How to navigate a sunset shoot with young children
First you need to trust that its 100% the right decision to take the photos at that time of day. Because it is!! These photos are an investment and it is worth throwing the normal routine out for one day for enjoying amazing photos for years to come! If you have concerns about routines, you can always schedule the session for Spring or Autumn when sunset is not so late.
I regularly shoot in nearby locations to Fleet, Hampshire such as Fleet Pond and Frensham Little Pond. We are blessed to have so many beautiful outdoor spaces nearby.
On the day of the session I would recommend not having a busy schedule during the day so children are not very tired. If they nap during the day, a longer nap is a good option.
Tell the children you are going on an adventure outdoors together and they will get to have a later bedtime! Make it fun! Bring some snacks and tell them you are meeting a friend and you are going to play some games and your friend will take some photos.
Here are some examples of photos taken during golden hour….. I can’t wait to create your photos for you soon 🙂
